The postal service has been pretty wonky since the ‘volcano that must not be pronounced’ in Iceland first erupted. Even shipping within Asia was not spared, my package from South Korea by speed post took more than twice as long and just received them yesterday. Pretty annoying! Now anxiously waiting for an expensive custom handmade Album that’s way way delayed, day 21 of waiting, no thanks to the ash cloud! I would need to adjust this so clients know the waiting period for their album, although it’s not uncommon 3 months being the delivery time in our industry.

This was one of the albums I delivered to my client for a Mandi Berlawat function. It’s not the same as the one that’s currently coming my way. I’ll reserve this album specifically for Non-Wedding events. I hope this specific friend of mine won’t be reading this or else I’ll get called being an elitist again lol, can you blame me? I want A Wedding Album to be thick, heavy, plush and most importantly (for me anyway) customisable i.e. not just generic black leather/linen type album; I want my clients to have that option. I’ll take some pictures of the album I’m referring to once I get my hands on it, please let it be soon!!!

There were couple of things that I considered when album shopping…for this Non-Wedding Event album. I need the album to be competitively priced so it won’t be too pricey for the final product. A client asked me how much the album cost, I mentioned to him the number and he jokingly said Oh so that’s how much they were paying me for the album then? LOL of course I cheekily replied Well that price + 10% for my time/service on top of that is only for a ‘blank’ album; my time editing the pictures and designing the album weren’t included yet hehe. The album is not merely papers but precious memories.

You can see from the pics below some of the criteria I seek for. Clean and tight stitching, this is important for me. Do you remember having school magazines with weak stitching and everything falls apart the first few times you read it. Stitching looks good to me. Flipping to middle of the album and the album doesn’t flop and break the stitching. The edges are well glued, no bubbles or excess glues creeping out, I guess spray adhesive was used, good!

Next is the quality of the paper used, bright white, good ‘weight’ and does not leave fingerprints! Yes I have encountered album that was prone to leave fingerprints. The colours are vibrant and Black & White contrasty and true to what I edited on my calibrated monitor An unreliable ‘printer’ is a real nightmare to photographers; our end product is at their mercy i.e. an improper calibrated printer may reproduce pictures too warm/yellow etc irregardless of the hours spend on editing the series of images.
